A year in review; 2010

2010 - It has been a great year! I remember just last year I was- well... I'll give you this in a story format...

It was a cold November night... When young Nikc-Nack was stumbling around the web, searching for a way to make an MMO like Runescape. He download a program called RPG maker, which eventually scared him so much that he ran to his Internet browser to cry for a while. Hours later he came across something called Game Maker 7. "Interesting", he said. Instantly he began work on the greatest game known to mankind(Catch the Clown). And within a few minutes had discovered his true abilities. Then he wanted more, he thirsted for more. And again he set foot into game maker to create another game, which he titled respectively "Nikc-Nack's Platformer". Yes his first game was unleashed to the YoYoGames community later on. But then he just wanted more! So created a piano program, and he thought so hard that he called it "Nikc-Nack's Piano". This was not enough for young Nikc, for in December he found that Game Maker 8 was released, and that was just the beggining.
On December 25th Nikc-Nack opened a gift from "The big fat red loser" and found something odd, it had a green G. It was Game Maker 8, PRO. The fat one had purchased it the night before and the licence information to a CD. NOW HE HAD THE POWER, AND HE USED IT!

But seriously, it has been a great year. Let me list the accomplishments:
-We released over 10 different games/programs
-We got a very large web presence and gained two new members
-We created our first website, then in december a new one...
-Many others...

But is that it? NO!
We have so much more to come this year. We plan to release tons of new games and other things. Our blog will be heating up as well!

So get ready!

Here we go!

TWO THOUSAND

ELEVEN!!

Hosting Flash Games

Mochi Games - Today I added three flash games to the site. Some of you may not like this addition. Since I am a Game Maker developer, but I feel this is a good idea for the time being. You see, I have the ability to choose which games are on the site and I won't put and extremely stupid ones. Also I like this because I earn a small amount of money from mochi games with each hit.
How does this effect you? Well honestly it doesn't. If you don't like it then don't bother to read the flash games pages and don't play the games. It really shouldn't effect you at all.
Like it, wanna help? The biggest support that you all can give me right now is views. Everytime you go and load a flash game mochi tracks it. So whenever you have fun, I get rich(haha).

What's coming next? Well soon I will be adding a small Google Ads to the sidebar, sorry everyone if you don't like it. I honestly don't LOVE to have ads cluttering up my site either. But I do want some source of income. If possible I am going to try to add this to the footer, so that it won't be as bothersome.
I'll also be adding a few more of my games to the site. There will not be a page for every game, instead I will have a "Classic Games" page where you can play my old and first games, like Nikc-Nack's Platformer, and Nikc-Nack's Piano. Stuff like that...
Much more activeness! With your guys support(meaning leave some comments and start conversations on the forums) I will try to make post much more regular. I would like to leave a new post every day, but that isn't always possible for me.

If you are all desperate to keep the ads off the site(or just love me). Then pretty soon I'll add a paypal donate button on the about page so that you can donate to keep ads off. I shall be fair, if I get $3+ a month then the ads will not stay.

I hope you all enjoy the updates,
Nikc-Nack

And in other news:
I have uploaded two new youtube videos for you all to enjoy!

Android Man!

Android Man - I have a new member to my family, I know you may think this is an odd thing to blog about, but this is a young beautiful addition to my family. I found this poor thing alone on the ground at a Wendy's fast food. I took it home and showed it to my family and we accepted him
His name is...

ANDROID MAN!!!!

Way better than any "apple" you got out there! He dances like a robot!! OH YEAH!

The purpose of this is mainly my photography. I'll be taking pictures of the little guy doing different things. I actually did find him on the ground by the door at a Wendy's and took him. He is pretty awesome actually.

For his first day with me I had to introduce him to my keyboard, and my favorite indie portal!

Keyboard:

GameJolt:

On the GameJolt image I had to add an outline to him because he was very hard to see, I also gave him a small drop shadow. If I get a better camera I won't have these problems!!!

Got any places you want to see Android Man at? Send me an E-mail at nikcnackgames@yahoo.com

I hope you enjoy,

Nikc-Nack Games Website; Final Remake!

Nikc-Nack Games - Hello everyone! This is a post to inform you that I have again (actually a friend did most of it) remade the Nikc-Nack Games website! This time it isn't screwed up and is browser friendly (it works in ALL browsers). One big thing that had changed is the wordpress usage. The site now runs as a wordpress theme and uses wordpress to render the pages. Now the site will still be good quality if you are thinking that wordpress will hurt that. Also I WON'T be completely redesigning the page anytime soon, I WILL make changes to the current though!

    http://nikc-nack.com/beta/

There is the URL for the site and I WANT FEEDBACK! Use the contact form to submit some feedback to me. I think the site is mostly bug free, again if there are bugs let me know. Don't be scared by the lack of pages right now, there will be more to come I assure you. I also will be changing the homepage a lot, I doubt you all want the homepage to be a basic blog (though it will contain some blog stuff).

What's coming up soon?
Definitely will be adding a forum, I haven't decided whether to use bbpress or phpbb, both can integrate with wordpress nicely but I think I'll go with bbpress because it is made by the same team who makes wordpress and I want to avoid and compatibility issues. Got an opinion on this? SEND FEEDBACK!
Customized homepage. I'll be working on the homepage a ton! Firstly I'll be getting my spotlight box to run in the new website, which has been causing me trouble thus far, but I should get it worked out soon. Next I'll add a nice little welcome message and all that lovely stuff!
Games Page! I don't know if I'll put many games on immedietally but I'll definitely be adding this to the next update, that way I can show off all of my awesome games! :D

Please keep tracking me for more updates,

New Gazette Post; Solitaire; Free on iOS

Game Maker Gazette - I just put out another blog post on the recovering Game Maker Gazette (GMG). Sadly the Game Maker Blog beat me to putting it up. But it doesn't matter, they aren't competition, just another GM news site working towards the same goal as the GMG.

You can view the article here: http://gamemakergazette.blogspot.com/2010/12/solitaire-free-for-ios.html

Or just read it on this post:

YOYO GAMES GLOG — Are you ready for a free game? Yes it's true, YoYo Games released a totally free game for iOS devices. It is solitaire, but done in game maker! It has lots of other features in it that most other solitaire apps do not include.

The game has really nice graphics, and of course a huge YoYo Games watermark on the back of the card mat, just to make sure it's visible at ALL times of play. The graphics go fairly realistic and they look really sweet. YoYo Games made it where the cards do not align straight, they get a bit con-jumbled as you play the cards, but this isn't very extreme, the cards are still perfectly readable. It also has several different backgrounds, I'm not sure if all of them have the YoYo Games logo on them, but I assume that they do. They also say the game has special effects, but they don't state what these "special effects" are, I'm assuming just cool graphical stuff.
They game features different things, such as: Klondike, 1 card draw, and 3 card draw, as well some different game modes. The cards move simply by drag and drop, and it also includes double card tap. The game has a high scores table, but they don't say if it is online or not, since it allows you to compare scores against friends I assume it has a online high scores table.
Also, one thing that may excite everyone, NO ADVERTISEMENTS!!! Yes, it's true, even on a free program YoYo Games chose not to place advertisements, even though they won't be earning money off of the app, I believe this is a very smart move for YoYo Games.
So if you own a iOS device go download this app and give er' a try! You won't lose anything if you don't like it.
You can download it for iPad here:  http://itunes.apple.com/app/simply-solitaire-HD/id404016931
Or for iPhone or iPod users here:  http://itunes.apple.com/app/free-solitaire/id406477514

Thank you,
        Nikc-Nack

Hope that helps,
              Nikc-Nack

Harris in a Portal 2

Harris in a Portal 2 - Here is a little update on my progress in HIAP2. So far I've finished a well working AI engine, along with a new tile set and adjusted background. Also have added in some interesting levels. Only have four levels to try right now, but that is better than only two.
You can check out the new version, and watch for updates on it's GameJolt Profile:

New Gazette Post!

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I left a new gazette post!

Image from Jesse Venbrux website

Jesse Venbrux Blog — Our friend Jesse Venbrux, developer of popular titles such as They Need to be Fed, had left a blog post giving everyone a nice set of tips for when they are developing their games that they hope to be apps. This nice post gives you information about what you can do to prevent your game from being rejected. In short, these are some of the things you have to do, and the things that you SHOULD do.

Let me go through and analyze his post:
All these different devices have different resolutions. iPhone (retina and the “old” 480×320), the iPad, as well as later possibly PSP, Android etc. Unfortunately at the moment it’s not easy changing your game from one res to the other. I had to change the room sizes of a bunch of levels manually which is annoying with a lot of levels. I don’t know whether YoYo Games has a solution for this yet (or whether I missed one) but simply changing view sizes through code doesn’t work; the iOS version takes the actual sizes in the room editor.
For this and other reasons you should be sure to be 100% done before you do other versions. I can tell you it’s a pain changing small details over and over in different versions. Unfortunately this will happen inevitably because you’re never 100% done. : )
Also to keep in mind is that not all devices have the same screen ratio. For example iPad’s 1024×768 is 4:3 and iPhone’s 480×320 is 16:9 (if I’m correct).
As he said in this section you need to be sure that all your rooms are set perfectly with the resolution of the device that the executable is going to be used for. It think it may be best if you duplicate every room during your development process, that way you can save time later on while you are trying to get your game submitted, you will also save YoYo Games a lot of time since they won't have to go over your game twice!

He wrote a paragraph on how small rooms can lead to your game feeling claustrophobic. In rooms that you stay in the same room for a long time it is very important to make it feel very free and open. He said that is can be really annoying to feel claustrophobic on a small screen like on an iPhone. So be very careful when doing your rooms.
He notes that when you are doing your graphics that using vectors are best, as they can maintain good quality while scaling. He explained how the iPhone using the same graphics as the iPad except they are scaled down 1.5 times. He said they were able to use view_scale.
Touch controls
Games actually designed for the touch screen work best on the device. Clicking on stuff, dragging stuff, drawing lines. However when you make such a game keep one thing in mind: Your finger will be in the way! This might not be obvious when using the mouse on your pc. Many iOS games solved this problem by having you interact with the game and then “sit back”, such as in Angry Birds, where you shoot the bird away and then watch, and Cut The Rope where you only need your finger for quick slices cutting the ropes.
This is a very important thing that I never even thought of while I was working on iOS games. It seems obvious that your hand is going to be in the way of the screen but never came into my mind while developing. Glad that he mentioned it here! Everyone should definitely watch out for this while you are developing your games!
Virtual keys
On iPhone I prefer games that are designed specifically for touch, but of course when you have some PC game concept it’s easy to just port it and use virtual buttons on screen. I’m guilty of this myself! When you do use virtual keys, make sure they are big enough and in comfortable positions. Try holding your hands in the positions on your own device (or any object that comes close enough if you don’t have one) to see how it feels. Especially on iPad I noticed you need to be careful. My hands aren’t small so I had no problems with my initial button positions…. until someone with smaller hands played it. If you don’t have an iPad (like me, I could only test when I was at YoYo) make a paper one!
I recommend making the actual touchable areas much bigger than the button’s graphics. It should be easy to play the game in different situations (portable device after all) and for people with different hands.
Another very nice thing to talk about! If you didn't know virtual keys would be the ones that you want in the game that replace keys on the keyboard (up, down, a, ect.). These are very important to place in a comfortably position and make them a reasonable size so that people can use them easily. For the iPhone 48x47 would probably be a good size, 32x32 may work as well, I'm not exactly sure since I don't own one myself. As for iPad, I would suggest going larger, but not too large. maybe 64x64 graphics would work well depending on the game, in some games you may want to be very large, like 128x128. It really depends on the device and the game.
App Icon
Design a good app icon that clearly shows what the game is about. Don’t just put in the name of your game. The best example of this I can think of is Cut The Rope, where the icon essentially shows you the entire concept in a simple picture:

(You cut the rope to get the candy into the creatures mouth).
As you read it is very important to make a descriptive icon. It doesn't matter if you are no good at graphics, go to the Game Maker Community and under the graphics category show everyone your game and ask for an icon. Icons are simple and small so people should get it done really fast! I think that app icons are 64x64 pixel graphics, so make sure you tell everyone the size and be specific!

Jesse also provided everyone with some pictures of him doing hard work at YoYo Games:

Harris in a Portal 2 Demo

Harris in a Portal 2 -  Been a couple of days since my last blog update and it's been a long time since any Harris in a Portal 2 News. So far I have finished two levels and completed my engine and a AI. They are both working really well for me but I would like some people to try them out. Along with that I have finished the punching animation for Harris. There is also a new game tileset since the old one was unappealing, the new one was designed by a guy on the GMC and I really like it a lot. So I hope you guys like it too! I edited the background so it fit the style of the game better, still not perfect and I'm looking for someone who can help me with that!

If you want to try a demo you can download it from my server at the following link:

I'll keep you updated before the Christmas day release,

Harris in a Portal 2 Request

Harris in a Portal 2 - You should all be happy to know that I have finished the engine and stuff for HIAP2 and am now moving onto the game. Also am trying to make clever ways to put in the story. As a special part I decided to add, Harris is going to be able to attack! WHOOPIE!!!!!!!!!!
Now that I am moving onto the game instead of the mechanics I was in need of a few graphics. I normally can satisfy myself but there are a few things that I can't get right, so I made a request topic on the GMC.
To check out the topic click HERE!

I'd really appreciate it if you could take a look at that topic and try to do one of the request. If you don't have a GMC account then you can E-mail me at nikcnackgames@yahoo.com.

Thanks in advance everyone,

NNG New Website BIG UPDATE!

Nikc-Nack Games Website - There have been a lot of changes for this update. I have finally finished a lot of little things I was putting off and am now satisfied to say that the homepage is nearly finished. I'm satisfied with it but I'm sure I will have to make minor changes.
I know I said that I was going to release a new page with this version, but because the excitement I had with the other things I decided to go ahead and let you guys have this. Pretty much the main changes are obvious, I completed a scrolling spotlight box, I have a domain, and the twitter link actually works now.

New Nikc-Nack Games Website Update

Nikc-Nack Games Website - I've finally finished up the template that I think I'll be keeping for the new website. I haven't gotten very far on much. All I really have done is the homepage. Pretty much the difference between the last version I had and this one is a matter of a background image, a few CSS style adjustments, logo change, and a couple other things.

You can check it out at the following link:
View on my Dropbox

What is coming in the next version?
- A functioning spotlight box
- At least one other page
- Other bug fixes

GMG; On They Need to be Fed

The Game Maker Gazette - I left another post on the Game Maker Gazette today. The Gazette seems to be slowly joining GMIndie in death... Sad to say that unless the Gazette picks up a bit, it might be the last post EVER!!!! I don't know if BrettBoy is still interested in running it. I may continue leaving post until I know for certain it is dead.
Anyhow, here is my post, copied from THIS article on the Game Maker Gazette

Image from YoYoGames

YoYo Games Glog — Recently the YoYo Games Glog announced the release of They Need To Be Fed(by Jesse Venbrux or better know as 2DCube). It appears from what they say that the full PC game is on the iOS. They don't say that they've cut out anything on the blog article, but I shall have to wait until I find someone who ones one.
For those of you who don't know, They Need To Be Fed(TNTBF) is the winner for the YoYo Games Competition 05. The goal of the game is like any other platformer, get to the end ALIVE. One thing that makes this so different is that you won't have to worry about falling, OH NO! This game has taken platform gravity to the extreme! The game uses 360° gravity, enabling you to jump off the side of one platform and land on the side of the other.

Each world has 7 exciting levels and a special “x” one to unlock.
Do you have what it takes to perfect every level?
Features:
* 7 worlds to complete
* 360°gravity gameplay
* Over 50 levels to play
* Physics-based platforming
* 25 challenging achievements
* Slick visuals
* Fantastic soundtrack by Jake Almond
From the YoYo Games Glog

I know for certain that there have been a FEW graphics changes just by looking at the iOS version. Also it sounds like from reading the Glog article that the sound was changed, I don't know if that was the original artist or not.

Anyone who has an iOS device should download this game now so that you can play a great Indie Game anytime and show off to your friends!
For anyone who does not own a iOS device you can still play the original game at the following links:
Download from Jesse's Website: http://venbrux.com/games/TNTBF.zip
Download from YoYo Games: YoYoGames(I shortened this down because of the HUGE url)

Hope you enjoyed it,

Harris in a Portal 2; UPDATE

Harris in  a Portal 2 - I haven't done a ton of work on it since I have been so sick over the past week or so. But there are now smoother collisions and some other changes. I also added a punching animation for Harris, at the present time it isn't working very well, the player must HOLD down on Z for it to work. I am trying to make it where the player only has to tap Z.

To try it visit this link: Download From Dropbox

Complete Version Update List:
**Version 0.11**
- Bumped the Frame Rate up by 15, the game now runs at 60 fps
- Added Punching for Harris
- Changed some of my collision code, collisions should be smoother now
- Made some sprite changes to the walking animation

**Version 0.1**
The Original demo of HIAP2

Harris in a Portal 2; First Demo

Harris in a Portal 2 - Harris in a Portal 2(HIAP2) is a action platformer, where you(Harris) must navigate through a top secret facility. As a different thing than the first one Harris will be fighting in this game. Mainly just security guards and stuff. The main focus of this game is just to navigate through difficult levels, with the addition of a few baddies along the way!
This first version is actually a copy of the very first room in HIAP, but I have just adjusted the entire engine and changed the sprites.
You can try it here: Download from Dropbox

Please give me feedback here or by E-mailing me at nikcnackgames@yahoo.com

Thank you,

Open Source Tileset

I decided that since I have been gone I should give you all a nice gift, consider it my welcome back gift to you. So I just made up a average(maybe better) tileset for you all to use to your liking, just please credit me.

I hope you all will enjoy this immensely!
Interestingly enough this tile set tiles very well 32x32 AND 64x64. The problem is you don't get center pieces with 6x64.

Please enjoy!

I've been busy...

Oh yes I have...

Hello everyone, as I'm sure most of you know, my blog has been pretty dead this week. Hardly left any post. Sorry that I have been extremely busy with company up and stuff. But don't worry, tomorrow I'll be back leaving loads more post like before this week.

Some word on current projects

BREACH:
BREACH is going a little slow right now, we have a basic engine that we think we will stick to, and I'm currently still working on developing the storyline.

TRACE:
No progress, no comment...

Unnamed Mystery Game:
Zargy and I have made great progress on this, we nearly have two entire rooms complete, we have also finished our inventory and loads of other stuff. We are currently in the process of adding things to the office area of the building.

Harris in a Portal 2:
Harris in a Portal 2 is coming along slowly right now. I'm currently in the process of developing a really advanced platform engine, that will give him wall grab abilities and a way to push boxes and stuff. Along with perfect collisions! :D

Thank you all for staying with me,
and sorry once more for the slump,

Harris in a Portal 2

Been a few days since my last update! I've been working very hard on my latest project! Which is the sequel to the loved game "Harris in a Portal". This game will feature the continuation to the story along with loads of levels. Work has been really hard since I am writing an entirely new engine! The player will have wall grabs and be able to attack, Harris also has gained a speed power, this power has developed and will give him short boost of speed, like in "Star wars; The Force Unleashed".

Two Open Source Minecraft Levels

I am proud to release two open source minecraft levels I created. They are both very simple and plain, but they are also my first two levels. I hope you all will enjoy and give me some feedback so I can keep improving on my level design skills to reach a expert level in that game!
Please enjoy these everyone!
And most importantly give me some good feedback! Because that is all I really need to improve! That and well, the full version of the program will help, XD!

Thank you and enjoy,
